Those who tour Colossal Cave east of Tucson can only imagine what wonders would exist within if environmentalism been a thing in the late 19th century. You can explore the craggy rock landscape for yourself, with a variety of tours for all ages. It’s here, just 15 minutes southeast of Tucson, where you’ll find Colossal Cave Mountain Park, one of the largest dry caves in the U.S. They gave my daughter a horseshoe as we watched them change a horses "shoe". The Rincon Mountains are a glaring exception, with an ancient underground labyrinth hiding just below the surface. This ranch has the lowest priced horseback riding in the Tucson area with fabulous views. There is also a ranch with a small museum. After several hold-ups, sheriffs and deputies, assorted cavalry, Yuma Indian trackers, and even Marshal Virgil Earp formed a posse to hunt down the gang. They hit several trains in quick succession, disappearing into the Rincon Mountains after each. Drive a little further into the park and there is a great picnic and camping area. Our guide tried to hurry the group along and had really bad breath but we still took our time and made plenty of time for cool pics. Colossal Cave Mountain Park is located east of Tucson on the Southern end of the Rincon Mountains. ![]() The basic tour is great for kids to experience. Broken stalagmites and Stalactites from years ago when folks shot them off with their guns.That is about it though. ![]() ![]() Keep in mind, hiking permits are required for some areas.This cave does have some damage done to it. Stop by a hiking-camping supply store to purchase a map or hiking guide or to contact local hiking groups and organizations for suggestions. The Summit Hut and Southern Arizona Hiking Club are good places to start. This is a strenuous, 18-mile round-trip hike through pristine Sonoran Desert landscape with tremendous views. This easy hike (6-miles, round trip) is an excellent introductory hike that features a beautiful, seasonal waterfall at the end.Ī strenuous, lengthy hike (16-mile round trip) in a remote location ending at one of the best summits in Tucson. The scenery is the classic Sonoran Desert, with many saguaros and other cacti. Today, the cave is part of the 2,400-acre Colossal Cave Mountain Park, which includes guided cave tours, hiking trails, a campground, a gift shop, a working ranch, and other activities and amenities. This easy, sandy, and level trail (10-miles round trip) crosses several times the Cactus Forest Drive loop within the Saguaro National Park. Bundrick Trail, which goes into a riparian area. Two easy hiking trails wind throughout the park, including the Gale W. This beautiful, 2,400-acre desert park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and showcases Colossal Cave and the historic La Posta Quemada Ranch. The most popular way to experience the Rincons is at Saguaro National Park East, which offers numerous trails, and Colossal Cave Mountain Park, a massive underground labyrinth and one of the largest dry caves in the world. Located on Tucson's east side is the Rincon Mountain Wilderness Area of Coronado National Forest. ![]()
